Forests for All Forever: 5 FAQ About the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council)

December 19th, 2018

You want there to be clean air for your great-great-grandchildren to breathe, right? In order to have fresh, pure air on earth, trees and forests are necessary.

But many of the forests are being cut down and the wood used as building materials in homes across America.

However, it doesn't have to be one or the other. There are ways to sustainably harvest lumber. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is the international organization that sets the standards for sustainable and ethical practices when it comes to lumber.

What to learn more? Check out these 5 FAQs about the FSC.

1. How Does the FSC Help the Environment?

Fresh air isn't the only thing that forests help provide us with. They are also a part of the cycle of clean water and even affect global temperatures. They provide food and homes for animals, medicines, and consumer products like paper and lumber.

Cutting down the forests to use the land for other uses may be profitable, but it's not sustainable. It's literally stealing from future generations to make a quick buck now.

The FSC works to promote proper stewardship of the forests. By following the standards set forth by the FSC, people can still use the forests for economic gain without destroying them for future generations.

2. What Is an FSC-Certified Forest?

The FSC has developed 10 Principles of Forest Stewardship. In order for a forest to be FSC-certified, the management of the forest must follow these principles.

This includes everything from socially conscious issues like the treatment of indigenous tribes to environmental issues.

3. What Does An FSC Label Mean?

If a product carries an FSC label you can be assured that the product comes from an FSC-certified forest.

FSC labels come in three different types--100%, FSC Mix, and FSC Recycled.

4. What If I Can't Find What I Want?

There is a huge selection of products that come with the FSC label. Unfortunately, you may not always be able to find exactly what you want.

However, more products are being added all the time. If you can't find what you're looking for, be sure to let the FSC know.

If the organization knows that there is a demand for a certain product, they will work to include it in their certification system.

5. Who Can Join the FSC?

Anyone who wants to help promote proper forest management practices can become a member of the FSC. It is an international organization whose goals provide help for everyone.

There are three chambers--Social, Environmental, and Economic. The chambers are further divided into developed and developing countries.

Each chamber represents their respective interests and the votes carry equal weight. This is to ensure that no one group's interests can dominate the others.
